Happy October Sunday, all! My father turned 78 yesterday. Happy, happy birthday, Dad! We’ll be visiting Dad (and Mom) later today. I think I’ll hold off on making him any gfe goodies for a bit though as Mom already baked him a Lemon Meringue Pie. Here’s a tribute to my Dad that I wrote last year. I love him and call on his wisdom and advice often. Just last week, I dropped one of my beloved sterling silver heart necklaces down the bathroom drain. Between Dad and Mr. GFE, it was retrieved! The heart now bears a tiny scratch from its ordeal, but the scratch makes it even more special. I’m sure you know exactly what I mean. I owe so much to my father. I truly would not be the person I am without my Dad.

Awe, so sweet! I love the respect you have for your dad.
My dad and I just went for a bikeride this morning. I’m glad I stumbled across this post…a nice reminder to appreciate my family.
Happy Sunday, and happy birthday, GFE Dad!

Hi Brittany–I’m so glad that you appreciated my post on my dad. It doesn’t do him justice though! 😉
How wonderful that you just enjoyed a bike ride with your dad this weekend … those times are super special, aren’t they? Yes, it’s important to be grateful for all that we have, with family being at the top of most of our lists. 🙂
Thanks so much! I’m sure Dad “felt” that kind birthday wish from you … good karma does travel long distances and even between folks who don’t know each other, you know? 🙂
Hugs,
Shirley

I just read your tribute to your Dad and it was beautiful. 🙂 You are so full of love, Shirley. I’m also keen on trying out those cookies! They look fantastic, I like to have a thick cookie now and then.

Hi Zoe–You are the sweetest. Thanks so very much for your kind words. I sooo appreciate them, and you being one of my gfe readers. 🙂
I don’t want you to be mislead though … those brown sugar chocolate chip cookies actually come out very thin … still chewy usually, but thin. I plan to play with that recipe more to make a dairy-free version. I’ve already made a version using coconut sugar and, oh boy, were the cookies delicious!
Hugsss,
Shirley

Happy birthday to your Dad! Thanks for linking to what you wrote last year. I remember reading this tribute but am very happy to read it again! Thanks too for letting us know about Katie at Kitchen Stewardship. I think I will really enjoy what she has to say. Shirley, I must tell you this…when I asked my hubby what he would like for dinner tonight, he said, “Something easy, but make sure you make some of those GARLIC CHEESE BISCUITS”. WOW< I must say say THANK YOU so much for this and for EVERY OTHER recipe that I have made of yours. YOU'RE THE BEST!

Hi Kay–Thanks so much for the kind words on Dad’s BD and my tribute post. Even re-reading it myself, I am reminded of how special my father is. 🙂
Katie is so amazing. I love her latest post on simplifying and letting go of all kinds of clutter in our lives.
Oh, how very neat, that your hubby is besmitten with the garlic cheese biscuits! I hope you are wearing a Kiss the Cook apron when you serve them. 😉 Thank so much for your super generous words, Kay. It’s nice having a cheerleader whose enthusiasm is as unwavering as yours!
Hugsss,
Shirley

Belated Happy Birthday to your Dad! I’m sure you had a great visit with him! ; )
Shirley says
Thanks, Anali! Yes, always good visits. Dad sent me home with some ancient pants to mend for him. Mr. GFE said, “Does your dad need new pants?” My reply with a chuckle, “Hey, he’s just breaking these in after 20 years.” Well, his pants might not be that old, but he tends to hang on to clothes that he loves. Gifts of new clothes just get put away, so I’ll happily mend for him. 😉
I missed seeing you at BlogHer Food this year! Were you there? It was really an awesome conference. The organizers improved so many things. Everything was top notch! 🙂
Hope all is well. Hugs,
Shirley

Oh, Shirley! This was an especially touching post for me! I just read the tribute to your Dad from last year and it was absolutely beautiful. Your Dad sounds so so so wonderful.
He reminds me so much of how my own Dad was. He really was one of my closest friends and the most amazing person. Strangely enough, although it has been 9 years since my Dad died, and he is the still the first person I think to call when something really great or really bad happens in my life. And I always have that one brief moment when i forget and think I am going to call him.
Thank you for sharing this special piece of your life.
And a very Happy Birthday to your Dad!!
xoxo

Kim–I’m glad you enjoyed my tribute, but my heart hurts for you. Thinking about the time when my sister and I can’t pick up the phone and seek out dad’s guidance or praise brings tears to my eyes. I know one never gets past that. What powerful forces dads can be in the lives of their girls! Thanks so much for the sweet BD wishes for dad! 🙂
xoxo,
Shirley

Happy Birthday to Daddy GFE! I too share a very strong bond with my Dad. Special people, Dads are!
Shirley says
Hi Alta–“Daddy GFE”! LOL He wouldn’t even know what to make of that title. 😉 Thanks for the sweet words and so glad you have that connection with your dad, too. It’s a gift for sure as are they. 🙂
