Today, March 29, is National Pita Bread Day so I’m sharing The Best Gluten-Free Pita Bread Recipes with you. Previously, these recipes (most of them anyway) were shared in one of my Bountiful Bread Basket series posts that included Flatbread, Focaccia, Naan, and Pita Bread Recipes.

Needless to say, as amazing a collection as that was, that recipe roundup was a lot. Even before I planned to add some new gluten-free pita recipes today. I think you all will be much happier checking out this manageable listing of incredible gluten-free pita bread recipes!
Pita bread is actually a type of flatbread but the reason most of it love it so much is that for most pita recipes, the dough puffs up and creates a pocket when cooked. Pita bread has always been so much fun and the perfect delivery system for so many yummies! And here we go …
The Best Gluten-Free Pita Bread Recipes
~ Easy Gluten-Free Pita Bread from The Loopy Whisk ~ gluten free, rice free, oat free, dairy free, egg free, vegetarian, vegan
Kat says: “This is THE BEST gluten free pita bread you’ll ever try – and it’s super easy to make! It’s wonderfully soft and it puffs up beautifully, creating a large pocket perfect for filling. You need just 8 ingredients to make it and the dough is a joy to work with, you can knead it and roll it out without any problems whatsoever. The recipe includes both a stovetop and an oven cooking option – both work great and your pita bread will puff up every time.”
Reader reviews: “Mmm these are good.” and “These are the best!!! Soooooo soft and pliable and delicious!” and “My GF wife loves the taste of these pita breads. I roll out the dough and cut them with a 4 inch cutter then cook them an open griddle, flipping as needed. They always puff and the size allows her to place them in a toaster for a Pita sandwich. Interesting they re-puff in the toaster.”
~ Easy Hummus Pitas from ChaCha’s Gluten-Free Kitchen ~ gluten free, grain free, dairy free, refined sugar free, yeast free, gum free, vegetarian
Kathryn said: “This is a really fast and easy recipe. Preparation took ten minutes and baking about twenty minutes. These pitas would not only make great sandwiches but would be good with just about any meal. I think mini falafel sandwiches could be a fun appetizer. I had to laugh at how much my sons loved them because neither of them likes hummus. I think we’ve found a new favorite.”

~ Paleo Pita/Naan Bread from Andrea Wyckoff (formerly Forest and Fauna) via The Wayback Machine ~ gluten free, grain free, dairy free, egg free, refined sugar free, yeast free, gum free, vegan, paleo, primal
Andrea said: “This pita-tortilla bread is ridiculously simple to make. The only way you can go wrong is to use a gritty coconut flour or try it without the psyllium husk. Unfortunately not all coconut flours are created equal. I have been disappointed with some of the newer brands of coconut flour I have ordered recently. I am now back to using the tried and true coconut flour made by Tropical Traditions, which is ultra fine, and not at all gritty, so it absorbs liquids really well.”

Kim says: “Not only is this pita bread gluten free, it’s also more soft and delicious than any pita bread you’ve ever had before!”
Reader reviews: “Wow! Are you even kidding me right now? I literally JUST made these and they are so fantastic I couldn’t wait to jump on here to comment. My husband (who is not GF) was like, “Oh, my God–these are delicious!” and “Delicious! I was really pleased with how easy these were to handle and roll out, plus they’re soft and chewy and puffed up like magic. Pita pockets all round at our house tonight. Thank you!” and “I’ve made this recipe twice now. On the grill and in the oven. Both times they were fantastic. They are so simple to make and are easy to freeze to have later. So happy I found this recipe! It’s a keeper.”

Paula originally made these pitas for her church’s Christmas party. She said: “The dinner at the party is going to consist of foods reminiscent of meals from Christ’s time, and one of the menu items was pita bread. I thought about taking the easy way out and bringing corn tortillas for my family, it’s a flat bread and will work just fine…but, dang it, I want pita bread now! So, I had to make it. I looked at least 7 or 8 pita recipes online and liked certain aspects of each, so they got conglomerated into this one…I love it. It’s really easy and they turned out so good that I ate it straight up with nothing on it…you can’t say that about regular pita bread, can you? Really, it’s so good, I’m definitely going to have to bring enough to share with the other gluten-free people at Church. 🙂 Everyone deserves good bread!”
Reader reviews: “Just made these last night. Good! Even my wheat-eating husband thought they were good.” and “These worked great! We made gyros and they were perfect.” and “I just made these for my son and he loved them! I cut the recipe in half since I wasn’t sure how they were going to turn out. When baking, I did have to lower the temp to 450 and bake for a little longer and flipped the pita over in the middle. But I think that’s just bc of my oven and bc I didn’t have a pizza stone (used baking sheet w/ silicone mat). Thank you for the recipe, will definitely be making it again!”

Reader reviews: “I made this tonight and it was light and soft and tasted delicious!” and “Made this recipe this afternoon, and it turned out well. I’m nibbling on a chunk of one now and it comes pretty close to a wheat pita.” and “I’ve made and frozen these, and then heated in toaster oven (on pan with piece of foil loosely covering)…they were just like fresh baked!” and “Hi Jeanine, I made this pita recipe last night and was thrilled with the results!! I have tried several other recipes and this was the only one that actually puffed up like beautiful bread pillows.”

~ Pitas in a Hurry from In Johnna’s Kitchen ~ gluten free, grain free, dairy free, nut free, yeast free, gum free, vegetarian
Johnna uses sesame seeds and her coffee bean grinder to create sesame flour, a key component in this recipe. She says: “When I take the lid off of the grinder, I exclaim, “Open, Sesame!” There truly is a treasure inside, sesame flour, and it doesn’t require forty thieves to unveil it.” She shared that she also uses her pitas as pizza crusts.
Reader reviews: “Made your sesame bread! Delish! Thank you for the recipe. I ate both of them when came out of the oven. Oops ! They are so easy I’m going to make tonight:).”

Cara says: “This gluten-free vegan pita bread is soft, chewy, bendable, flavorful, and still tastes great warmed up two days later (that’s as far as I got). You can slice right through it and stuff it with your favorite pita pocket treasures.”
Reader review: “OH MY GOSH I made these pita pockets this afternoon (I was so excited to try them out that I just had to start at once) and they’re AMAZING! Thank you so much for sharing!” and “Thank you, thank you, thank you! Five stars all the way. These are the lightest, fluffiest, but strongest pitas I’ve ever had. My dough was pretty sticky, stuck to my fingers but not the bowl, but I just used a bit more flour on my hands and it worked.” and “This recipe is amazing and so easy to make! I’m not much of a baker and usually buy my gluten free bread but this recipe turned out so great! I didn’t have any arrowroot so I substituted tapioca flour. I was a little nervous making this because my experience with gluten free bread has been that it is flimsy and falls apart but I was able to fill these pitas full without them coming apart. Thank you so much!”

Kristin says: “These gluten free pita breads are quick and easy to whip together. In fact, it made me wonder why I’ve never bothered making them before, particularly when I make homemade naan bread all the time. I’ve also made a spiced falafel-style hamburger that’s perfect in place of gluten-free falafel inside the pita. I’ll be posting it shortly and will add the link here. I added a note below, but if you’re worried about whether or not your pitas will puff up properly, you can let them rise 15-20 minutes and then bake as directed. They’ll be cooked through and puffed enough that you can easily slice and use them as pitas. Enjoy!”
