Shirley thank you for hosting, the sponsors, the bloggers, everyone involved in the March Muffin Madness. I am so happy that I won three cook books! Yeah! I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 1989. Minimal resources then and not much known about CD. I had adapted my own recipes, but sometimes it was hit and miss whether they turned out. Then the internet brought us all together and wonderful people that blog about being GF helped us stay on top of the game. Recipes being shared, cook books being written to help us with being GF. I can’t wait to get my new books and start cooking. Blessings to you and thank you for a great contest!

Nancy–I know everyone who participated in MMM will appreciate your thanks! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful message and share some of your own personal gluten-free story. So often we don’t know anything about each other and I think that knowing a little bit more truly makes a difference. I can’t imagine how lonely the gluten-free world must have been in 1989. Kudos to you for persevering through it all. I’m so glad your community eventually showed up for you, dear. It really does take a village.

I’m excited for you and the lovely variety of cookbooks that you won! Enjoy. πŸ™‚

Hi Diane–Thank you for that wonderful feedback! πŸ™‚ I like the way you think as far as benefitting from your cooking class with Cinde of Everyday Gluten-Free Gourmet first so you can better enjoy Cauliflower Power after that. πŸ˜‰

I’m excited to be one of the winners. I won the raw honey and I am so happy. Thank you, Shirley, for MMM and all your GF recipes and support. I was diagnosed with CeD and DH (Dermatitis Herpetiformis) in 1980 and there was absolutely NOTHING out there…. I knew more than the dieticians then! πŸ˜‰ … and it’s been a long journey.
    Thank you SO much!

Hi Janet–You’re very welcome of course! I’m so glad I did my prize audit and discovered you were one of the winners of the honey! πŸ™‚ Thank you so very much for the lovely feedback on MMM, as well as sharing some of your personal gluten-free history. I’m curious … was your DH helpful at all in getting you diagnosed? 43 years after your diagnosis, I’m not really sure how far we’ve come with diagnosing celiac and DH and so much else that is related but I’m glad you finally got a diagnosis and I hope you’re doing well now. Most of us who get diagnosed in adulthood don’t come out “scot-free,” so to speak.

      Hugs,
      Shirley

Actually, it was the DH diagnosis at age 30 that did it. I had had extreme bloating (couldn’t zip my jeans) and had NO idea what was going on. Then, one day, I itched and scratched all night from head to toe …. went in to see the dermatologist. He just looked at me, observed the symmetrical hives, and declared “Dermatitis Herpetiformis” — sent me home with a rx for steroids and with NO explanation. It took some digging through books, reading, and astonishment for me to realize that this meant CeD. Terrible! I was never told to see a GI doc … and didn’t see one until I started with colonoscopies. It was all a long, self-learning ordeal.
Hah! I remember in the 80’s scraping cheese and sauce off of lasagne noodles thinking I could do that. Hah! How much gluten I must have ingested for years, not knowing.
Thanks for asking …. we all have our stories. πŸ™‚

Oh, Janet, I’m so sorry that you went through all that. It’s inexcusable and criminal IMO. So many doctors have committed medical malpractice when it comes to their patients with celiac and/or DH. I’d like to think we’ve made tremendous progress but I’m not so sure that’s true. I still hear so many horror tales and every time I share info about DH, many come out of the woodwork to tell me how they’ve been misdiagnosed or simply to say, wow, I think I have that!

Thanks again for sharing, especially the important details. I’m convinced that sharing our personal gluten-free stories helps get others diagnosed because they see themselves in the stories and demand testing.
